Plausible Review: Analytics Without the Creep Factor

Plausible does web analytics differently. No cookies. No personal data. No consent banners. The dashboard you understand in under a minute. The script is under 1 KB.

What Is Plausible?

A privacy-first analytics tool from Estonia. It tracks pageviews and sessions — visitors, bounce rate, visit duration, referral sources, countries, devices, pages. It does not track individual users. No cross-site tracking. No fingerprinting.

Key Features

1. Privacy by Default

No cookies stored. No IP address collected. Plausible's position is simple: you do not need to spy on visitors to know how your site is doing. No consent banners, no GDPR anxiety. For sites with EU visitors, this alone saves real money on legal costs.

2. Tiny Script

Under 1 KB. Google Analytics 4 is 45+ KB. That is not a small difference — pages load faster and Google PageSpeed stops complaining. You can also serve the script from your own domain via a proxy, which keeps ad blockers from breaking your analytics.

3. Dashboard

Open it. One page shows everything — top pages, referral sources, countries, devices, goals. No drilling through menus. No reports with names you have to Google.

  • Top pages and entry pages
  • Direct, organic, social, referral, campaign sources
  • Country and city breakdown
  • Device, browser, OS
  • Custom event goals (clicks, signups, downloads)

4. Self-Hosted

Plausible is open source under AGPL. Run it on a $5 VPS and it costs you nothing beyond the server. The hosted plan handles updates for you, but having the self-host option means you own your data completely.

5. Reports

Weekly or monthly email summaries of key metrics. Slack integration if your team lives there. Functional, nothing fancy.

Where Plausible Is Not the Right Fit

It is web analytics, not product analytics. You cannot build funnels or track retention. If you need to know which users did what inside your app, Plausible is not the tool — use Mixpanel or PostHog.

Segmentation is basic. Filter by page, source, country, device. But there are no custom user properties or advanced cohorts. This is deliberate — Plausible does not track people.

Integrations exist but are few. Google Search Console sync is the important one. But there is no CRM connection, no ad platform data pipeline.

Pricing

Plan Price Pageviews/Month
Growth $9/mo 100,000
Business $19/mo 1,000,000
Enterprise $49/mo 10,000,000
Self-hosted Free Unlimited (your server)

$9/month for 100k pageviews is straightforward. No metered pricing, no surprise bills. At larger scale this is much cheaper than GA4's enterprise pricing model — if you can even parse GA4's pricing model.

Our Verdict

Plausible is for people who want to know their traffic numbers without the overhead. Content sites, blogs, small business pages. It handles 90% of what these sites need with a tiny fraction of the complexity.

If you run an ecommerce store or a SaaS product with actual user flows, you still need GA4 or a product analytics tool alongside it. But for the typical website, Plausible is a clean replacement.

Score: 8.5/10 — The GA4 alternative most content sites should switch to. Lightweight, private, and the dashboard is actually pleasant to use.
